The objective of this course is to deepen students’ understanding of the concepts related to the planning and management of infrastructure, with particular emphasis on transport infrastructure in both interurban and urban environments.
The course examines contemporary trends in infrastructure planning and management, drawing on modern international regulations, guidelines, and best practices. Particular reference is made to European Directives and European Norms (EN standards) related to infrastructure design and management.
Beyond the traditional topics of transportation infrastructure planning and management, the course places strong emphasis on road safety in infrastructure design and operation. Key topics include Road Safety Audits, roadside safety, safe infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists in urban environments, and the effective management of road infrastructure safety. Special attention is given to the fundamental concept of the Safe System approach.
In addition, specific categories of transport infrastructure—such as at-grade intersections, roundabouts, and grade-separated interchanges—and their contribution to road safety are examined.
Overall, the course focuses on the application of contemporary regulations, guidelines, standards, and best practices, primarily at the European level and secondarily at the international level, and explores how these frameworks can be effectively utilized in the planning, implementation, and operation of infrastructure projects.
